General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
With a fever above 38.5 °C, a swollen or painful eye, blurred vision or unusually severe headaches need urgent attention. Call 15 or 112 or go to an emergency department before considering any prevention appointment.
Sinusitis is inflammation of cavities in the facial bones. It often follows a cold and can be viral. Pressure below the eyes alone therefore does not establish a bacterial infection.
Increasing pain on one side, particularly when bending the head forward, or purulent discharge from only one nostril calls for assessment the same day. Pain extending towards the teeth should also be reported to the doctor.
Moderate pain below the eyes lasting beyond three days with a fever below 38.5 °C, or a cold lasting more than a week with new sinus pain, warrants a consultation in the following days. These are not waiting periods when more concerning signs are present.
To describe the course, note when the cold began, whether one or both sides hurt, your temperature and what worsens the pain. Mention dental problems and treatments already used. The doctor assesses the cause and the need for treatment.
Pharmacy advice can help check products considered for comfort while you arrange the appropriate medical assessment. It does not replace assessment of warning signs. A separate discussion about general prevention can be prepared after this episode.
