Dozing during the day: what is the Epworth Sleepiness Scale for?

Eight everyday situations help describe how likely you are to doze. Your answers prepare a discussion with a doctor without establishing a diagnosis.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale is a questionnaire estimating the likelihood of dozing in eight ordinary situations. These include reading while seated, watching television and travelling as a passenger. It describes a tendency to fall asleep during the day.

Each situation is rated from 0, no chance of dozing, to 3, a high chance of dozing. Use the form linked from the Ameli page and answer from your experience. Do not deliberately try to fall asleep or test yourself while driving.

Keep your answers for the consultation and prepare examples: when you doze, how often, and how you usually sleep. If a situation on the form is difficult to answer, tell the doctor rather than invent an experience.

The doctor considers the answers alongside an interview about sleep and an examination. They may request specialist advice or sleep tests. A total alone cannot identify the cause of sleepiness or establish sleep apnoea.

Seek medical advice if sleepiness persists or the episodes of dozing seem abnormal. Also prepare a list of the medicines you use. Do not stop a treatment yourself because you suspect it causes drowsiness; discuss it with the doctor.

Do not drive when tired or sleepy, and avoid dangerous machinery. The questionnaire does not give permission to drive: safety depends on your actual alertness, even before the answers are interpreted.
