General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Has your doctor requested a home record? Repeated readings help assess blood pressure; a single number is not enough to establish a diagnosis.

Have the device and cuff size checked, then ask for a demonstration. An appropriate upper-arm monitor is preferable to a monitor used at the wrist.

For thirty minutes beforehand, avoid exercise, smoking, food and caffeine. Then rest seated for three to five minutes in a quiet room before measuring.

Support your back, place your feet flat and support your bare arm at heart level. Stay silent and still while the monitor takes the reading.

Clarify which arm, times and series of readings are required. Follow the agreed method using the same arm to obtain a consistent record.

Write down the results and give them to your doctor. Tell the professional about handling difficulties or conflicting readings so that these can be explained.
