General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
A prescription for a sweat test does not confirm cystic fibrosis on its own. It is part of a diagnostic assessment. New breathlessness without distress needs medical assessment the same day; in France, call 15 or 112 immediately if it prevents you from finishing sentences or comes with bluish lips or changes in alertness.
The French national protocol on CFTR-related conditions describes three stages: stimulating sweat production, collecting sweat and measuring chloride. Qualified staff collect the sample using a specified method. Ask how the test will be organised for you or your child and which preparation instructions apply.
The analysis measures chloride in the sweat. This measurement forms part of the assessment of CFTR protein function, which is involved in transporting these ions. The French protocol states that the collection and assay methods should appear on the report. Ask how this measurement will be interpreted in your assessment.
Some results call for another measurement or further investigations. The doctor may, for example, add genetic analysis. Clarify whether the report provides a conclusion or leaves a situation requiring further assessment, and which examination would follow. Interpretation also depends on clinical signs and the other findings.
Genetic analysis examines the CFTR gene; it answers a different question from sweat chloride measurement. The French national care protocol describes situations where the identified variants and sweat test do not allow a straightforward conclusion. The specialist team may then continue investigations. Ask what each result confirms and what remains uncertain.
Cystic fibrosis diagnosis and assessment are organised with a specialist French centre known as a CRCM. For your appointment, clarify who performs the test, when the result will be discussed and with which doctor. If the assessment continues, ask how the team will coordinate the sweat test, genetics and other examinations.
