Combined rapid flu/Covid tests: understand their limits

Technique, clinical benefit and negative results: HAS assessments go beyond how many viruses a test targets.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

A combined rapid diagnostic orientation test looks for antigens from several viruses, such as flu and SARS-CoV-2, sometimes also RSV. Combined describes its targets, without guaranteeing a certain diagnosis.

Do not confuse it with a multiplex molecular analysis, which detects genetic material. The January 2026 HAS report evaluates molecular techniques and separately recalls conclusions about rapid antigen tests.

That report recalls that individual medical benefit in community care is not demonstrated for combined rapid tests, because performance and clinical-utility evidence is insufficient. It gives no guarantee for every current device.

Possible population benefit remains conditional: performance and effects on care must be confirmed. That prospect does not prove the result lets you decide your own medical care.

HAS warned about false negatives in 2023. A negative result is not enough to abandon precautions around vulnerable people; figures from that older assessment do not describe every current test.

If you have symptoms, seek medical advice. Describe the exact test, date, result and symptom progression. Do not choose treatment alone; a prevention appointment does not replace this assessment.
