Travel for care: check the prescription and approval before assuming reimbursement

A vaccination booking does not automatically make travel reimbursable. Health needs, eligibility conditions and the transport prescription matter.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Having an appointment, including for vaccination, is not enough to have the journey reimbursed. Coverage depends on medical and administrative conditions.

The doctor assesses the need and suitable transport. The prescription must be issued before travel, except in a medical emergency; certain official summonses replace it.

An ALD designation alone is insufficient: the journey must relate to that condition and meet the specified impairment or disability criteria, among other requirements.

Some journeys also require prior approval, for example travelling more than 150 kilometres one way. Ask the prescriber whether this framework applies.

When prior approval is required, send the request to your fund before travel and follow the response rules. Booking a journey does not count as health insurance approval.

Check the prescribed transport and keep the documents needed for the claim. Your fund can explain the formalities; this article does not confirm your individual reimbursement.
