Uveitis: why investigate causes beyond a red eye?

Uveitis affects internal eye structures. Pain may be absent, and treatment also depends on any associated disease.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Uveitis is inflammation of the uvea inside the eye. It differs from inflammation of the conjunctiva.

Anterior disease may cause redness, deep pain and reduced vision. Posterior disease may impair vision without pain.

Reduced vision needs urgent advice even when painless. Absence of pain is not a reason to wait.

Eye examination identifies the affected area. Some causes are infectious; others accompany general inflammatory diseases.

Treatment depends on location and cause. It may combine eye treatment with care for the identified underlying disease.

Do not reuse old steroid eye drops without diagnosis: steroids can worsen some corneal infections. Clarify follow-up arrangements.
