Antigens, adjuvants and excipients: what do vaccine ingredients do?

Understand ingredient roles so you can ask a professional a specific question about a vaccine's composition.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

An ingredient list becomes easier to understand when you distinguish ingredient roles. Antigen, adjuvant and excipient have different functions. Note the term you would like the professional to explain.

A vaccine antigen stimulates an immune response directed towards the infectious agent concerned. It helps the body’s defences recognise a target. Ask what that target is, without treating every ingredient as having the same purpose.

An adjuvant strengthens the immune response triggered by the antigen. Not every vaccine contains one. Ask about its role in the relevant composition instead of transferring one vaccine’s ingredient list to another.

An excipient supports the medicine’s formulation, including administration or preservation. “Inactive” does not mean useless. Ask the professional to explain the function of the ingredient you have noted.

Preservatives can prevent contamination after some presentations are opened. Stabilisers maintain quality during storage. These ingredient categories do not mean every vaccine has the same list or that all ingredients serve identical purposes.

Give the professional the exact ingredient name and have the proposed composition checked. Ask for an explanation for your circumstances before continuing your vaccination pathway; one isolated term cannot decide the question.

Flu and Covid-19: the 2026–2027 campaign

The national flu and Covid-19 vaccination campaign starts on 13 October 2026. In Doctolib, choose “Vaccination antigrippale (Grippe)” or “Vaccination COVID-19” for the vaccination you want to discuss.

Bring your carte Vitale and, for flu, your coverage voucher if you have one. The professional checks the recommendations and coverage conditions that apply to you.

The pharmacy checks whether vaccination and coverage apply based on the vaccine, your age and your circumstances.
