Why does an inactivated flu vaccine not cause influenza?

Distinguish the vaccine’s composition, possible reactions and a respiratory infection. Illness after an injection deserves assessment.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

An inactivated influenza vaccine cannot give you flu. It contains inactive virus components, without a live germ capable of causing that infection. Illness after the injection deserves assessment rather than an automatic attribution.

Ameli describes possible reactions such as local pain, muscle aches or a mild fever. These signs do not confirm influenza infection. Ask what is expected for the vaccine received and when you should contact the professional again.

Influenza and Covid can also have similar symptoms. A cough or tiredness appearing after vaccination therefore cannot identify the illness on its own. A doctor assesses the symptoms and decides whether any tests are needed to clarify the situation.

A vaccinated person can still catch influenza. That does not turn the inactive vaccine components into an infectious virus. To clarify an earlier episode, describe dates and symptoms without concluding from their sequence alone.

If you are ill, seek medical advice, promptly if you are pregnant, older or have a chronic illness. Severe symptoms require urgent help; do not automatically attribute them to the vaccine and wait for them to disappear.

Before future vaccination, discuss that experience with the professional and ask about the vaccine’s composition. Have your circumstances confirmed before choosing the vaccination pathway. Keep the advice on expected effects and signs that need reporting to a professional.

Flu and Covid-19: the 2026–2027 campaign

The national flu and Covid-19 vaccination campaign starts on 13 October 2026. In Doctolib, choose “Vaccination antigrippale (Grippe)” or “Vaccination COVID-19” for the vaccination you want to discuss.

Bring your carte Vitale and, for flu, your coverage voucher if you have one. The professional checks the recommendations and coverage conditions that apply to you.

The pharmacy checks whether vaccination and coverage apply based on the vaccine, your age and your circumstances.
