I do not smoke: can vaping still create dependence?

A flavour or absence of tobacco does not fully describe a product: nicotine can cause dependence and aerosols are not harmless.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Yes, if the liquid contains nicotine. An e-cigarette creates an aerosol and can deliver this addictive substance even without tobacco. Not smoking cigarettes therefore does not prevent dependence related to vaping.

Not every liquid contains nicotine. A fruity flavour, attractive packaging or the word “vapour” does not reveal its composition: distinguish the ingredients from the marketing.

Being nicotine-free does not make the aerosol harmless. Ameli states that vaping products can contain toxic or potentially toxic substances, with long-term effects still insufficiently understood.

For adolescents who do not smoke, prevention aims to delay starting vaping. Young people are particularly vulnerable to nicotine’s effects; this question is not simply a comparison between two established adult habits.

If the urge to vape keeps returning or stopping becomes difficult, discuss it with a health professional. Describe the product and when you use it; you do not need to diagnose yourself before asking for a conversation.

A young-consumer consultation offers a free, confidential discussion. Young people may attend alone or accompanied; parents may also seek advice. This national service does not mean every pharmacy provides a specialist consultation.
