General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Dilated, winding superficial veins may accompany heaviness or skin changes. Swelling alone does not establish its cause.

The doctor asks about treatments and previous vein problems, then may examine the legs standing and lying down.

Venous Doppler ultrasound examines veins and blood flow. The doctor interprets its report to guide care.

For the prescribed Doppler ultrasound, bring the prescription, referral and any earlier vein surgery reports. Apply no leg cream or oil that day.

A suddenly swollen or very painful leg, or a warm, red and painful vein cord, needs urgent medical assessment.

In this context, difficulty breathing, sudden chest pain or faintness can indicate an emergency. Call 15 or 112 immediately.
