Wavy lines or a dark spot in central vision: who should you see?

A change in central vision needs prompt ophthalmological assessment. Timing depends on the signs and known eye disease; acute emergencies take priority.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

A red eye with a sudden reduction in vision or intense pain needs ophthalmological care the same day, or emergency care. Do not wait for the time frames below.

Newly wavy lines, a central spot or less distinct details warrant contacting an ophthalmologist promptly: signs suggestive of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) need assessment in less than a week.

If early age-related maculopathy with drusen is already known, reduced visual acuity requires urgent ophthalmological assessment within 48 hours. Contact the practice as soon as you notice the change.

AMD can affect central vision while preserving peripheral vision. The other eye may mask changes; the retina needs examination.

If pupil dilation is planned, ask the practice how to arrange your journey home. Vision can be blurred for two to three hours, preventing driving.

If you are being followed for AMD, report any new change in vision, including in the other eye. Do not wait for the next scheduled check.
