Vitamin D: why check before taking a supplement?

Before adding vitamin D, have your products and treatments checked to avoid unnecessary combinations or overlapping intake.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Vitamin D contributes to calcium and phosphorus absorption and to bone mineralisation. Understanding this role does not allow you to decide on an appropriate supplement by yourself.

Oily fish and egg yolk are among the dietary sources of vitamin D. Describe your usual diet to the professional to prepare the discussion, without replacing a prescribed treatment.

As part of osteoporosis care, a doctor may correct vitamin D deficiency and recommend a combination with calcium. This applies to a medical situation that has been assessed.

Identify vitamin D in the products you already use, including the stated amount and how often you take them. Bring packaging and prescriptions before combining two sources.

A food supplement containing vitamin D replaces neither a balanced diet nor a medicine. Ask what purpose justifies adding it, instead of following a commercial promise on a label.

If vitamin D has already been prescribed, do not add another product containing it on your own. Ask about precautions and report any unusual effects to a health professional.
