A bite or scratch while travelling: why seek prompt advice, even if vaccinated?

Vaccination before travel does not remove the need for care after rabies exposure. Have a bite, scratch or risky saliva contact assessed promptly.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

A bite to the face, neck or genitals, a torn wound or one reaching bone, heavy bleeding, or loss of sensation or movement requires urgent help. In France, call 15 or 112 without delay. Without delaying the call or care, immediately wash the wound with plenty of running water and soap, then rinse very thoroughly.

A bite, scratch or licking by a suspect animal can expose someone to rabies. Bats are among the mammals that can transmit it. While travelling, have the contact assessed promptly without waiting until you return.

The doctor examines the wound and assesses infection risks, including rabies. Immediate advice is needed particularly for a cat bite, a deep wound, an injury near a joint or to the hands or feet, an animal of unknown vaccination status, diabetes or immunosuppression.

Preventive vaccination simplifies care but does not remove the need for additional vaccination after exposure, even suspected exposure. Assessment and care must take place as soon as possible.

In France, assessment of treatment after exposure and its delivery are provided by authorised rabies centres. Abroad, seek care locally to obtain this assessment promptly.

Give the location, time and circumstances of the contact, the animal involved and its vaccination status if known. Your own vaccination record is useful; gather this information without delaying care.
