RSV: discussing vaccination during pregnancy or antibodies for your baby

The two prevention options involve different people and timing. Prepare the relevant information with your pregnancy-care team.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

If your baby is already ill, a prevention decision does not replace a medical examination. In France, bluish lips, pauses in breathing or increasing breathing difficulty require calling 15 or 112 without delay. Care takes priority over organising immunisation.

Two options are offered to prevent RSV infections in infants: vaccinating the mother during pregnancy with Abrysvo, or giving the baby a monoclonal antibody. The antibody given to the baby is a preventive medicine; it is not an RSV vaccination of the infant.

Maternal vaccination aims to protect the baby through antibodies passed from the mother. The other option supplies the infant directly with antibodies against the virus. These approaches reduce the risk of infection; they do not protect against every infection or guarantee protection for an individual baby.

Prepare your stage of pregnancy, expected delivery date and records of any previous RSV vaccination. The professional checks the appropriate timing during pregnancy and the prevention period. Mention any immune suppression, which affects the choice. A general recommendation does not confirm that you personally can receive the vaccine.

A premature birth or delivery soon after maternal vaccination may lead the team to arrange antibodies for the baby. RSV vaccination during an earlier pregnancy also matters. Have the doctor, midwife or maternity team check these details, rather than calculating an interval yourself or automatically planning both interventions.

Before the birth, ask which option is planned, when it is due and how that information will reach the team caring for your baby. For eligible infants, antibodies may be offered at birth or during their first RSV season. Measures to reduce virus transmission remain useful alongside either prevention option.
