General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

If dry-eye discomfort persists despite the measures you have tried, arrange an ophthalmology appointment. Persistent discomfort with contact lenses also needs examination, including assessment for damage to the cornea.

The examination covers the eyelids and the surface of the eyes. Depending on the findings, the specialist may test tear production or request further investigations to look for a cause.

Bring your medicine list and mention previous eye operations or known illnesses. Some medicines can contribute to dryness; do not stop them yourself, as changes need discussion between the doctors involved.

Artificial tears may relieve discomfort. Ask which product and instructions suit you; preservative-free preparations are preferred to limit irritation. Using them does not replace assessment of persistent discomfort.

Reduce exposure to smoke and air conditioning, ventilate rooms and adjust humidity. Take screen breaks and blink regularly. A red eye with reduced vision or severe pain needs ophthalmology care the same day or emergency assessment.

For the appointment, note when symptoms occur, products already tried and contact lens use. Ask what cause has been identified, which adjustments to try and when to return if the symptoms persist.
